What this means for the buildout

Kopin's Neural I/o platform, leveraging its microLED technology for optical interconnects, directly addresses the AI infrastructure bottleneck of copper interconnects, targeting a $63B U.S. market. The company's U.S.-based manufacturing and government support position it as a potential key supplier for domestic AI infrastructure, especially given recent government requirements to avoid Chinese-made optical interconnects. The IBAS-funded production line will support both defense and AI infrastructure microLEDs, creating a dual-use advantage.

What was said

Kopin reported Q2 FY2026 revenue of $12.7M, up 51% YoY, with product revenue roughly flat at $7.6M and nonproduct revenue jumping to $5.1M. The company achieved three major milestones in its U.S. Army color microLED program under IBAS, including exceeding 150,000 nits brightness, early integration progress, and receiving custom manufacturing tools. Sentinel FPV secured multiple new prototype orders tied to the Drone Dominance Program, and the company opened a new optics and photonics design center in Dallas. Cash and marketable securities totaled $50.3M, including $26M restricted cash. The company reported a net income of $0.9M, driven by investment gains and tax benefits, and expects to begin GAAP profitability in Q4 2026.

Up 51% YoY from $8.5M, driven by grant revenue, Fabric.AI collaboration, AR thermal clip-on, and higher R&D revenue
Product Revenue
$7.6M
Slight increase from $7.5M YoY, with higher defense revenues offset by lower industrial applications
Nonproduct Revenue
$5.1M
Up from $1.0M YoY, driven by government microLED grant and Fabric.AI collaboration revenue
Loss from Operations
$3.5M
Narrowed from $5.5M loss in Q2 2025, reflecting revenue growth and stable opex
Net Income
$0.9M
Improved from a $5.2M net loss YoY, helped by $2.3M gains on investments and $2.1M tax benefit
Management outlook

Management expects a solid second half exceeding prior guidance, with GAAP profitability and positive free cash flow targeted for Q4 2026. They are increasingly optimistic about 2027 revenue trajectory, citing momentum across multiple platforms. Key milestones include transitioning to microLED manufacturing product in mid-2027, completing the Neural I/o demonstrator by end of 2026 with a CES January 2027 demo, and bringing the in-house OLED deposition line online early 2027.

From the call

We are the only company in the world manufacturing 4 types of microdisplays, the inventors of bidirectional microdisplays, the sole source provider on several Department of War programs of record with many years of sustained production ahead, and our technology platform is now being deployed across some of the fastest-growing segments in defense and AI infrastructure.

on Competitive positioning

Our demonstrator with Fabric.AI is going to demonstrate just that. We will be sending bits, receiving bits, and I will not go into all the details because I do not want to ruin the surprise.

on Neural I/o CES demo

We expect to begin generating GAAP profitability and positive free cash flow in our fourth quarter of this year.

What analysts asked

With the planned demo of Neural I/o at CES in '27, can you give us more color on what proof points will be on display?

Michael Murray said the demo will show transmitting and receiving bits in real-time, featuring a full transceiver tile that demonstrates how they will scale down to semiconductor sizes and achieve 1.6 terabits per second. He noted the first pull of optical data was well received by potential customers.

Can you talk about remaining catalysts for the rest of the year, including potential follow-on IBAS funding?

Michael Murray said they expect to meet three more milestones in Q4 2026, positioning them to provide samples next year. He also mentioned active conversations for further IBAS funding for other devices beyond Soldier Borne Mission Command.

Can you give a range of the Sentinel FPV opportunity in 2027?

Michael Murray said it's at least tens of millions of dollars in new customer orders and deliveries, potentially doubling depending on which companies win in the Drone Dominance Gauntlet. They are partnered with several top 5 contenders and are playing the spread.

Potential supply chain impact
FABCFabric.AI is a key customer and partner for Neural I/o; Kopin owns 19.9% and is exclusive manufacturer. Progress on the $15M development order and CES demo could signal continued collaboration revenue and potential production orders.
FABCFabric.AI provides system-level design and go-to-market for Neural I/o; Kopin's manufacturing capabilities are central to the partnership. Any delays or successes in the demonstrator could impact Kopin's revenue trajectory.
