What was said

Lumentum reported Q4 FY2026 revenue of $1.01B, up 109% YoY, with non-GAAP gross margin of 50.4% and operating margin of 36.6%. Components revenue grew 22% sequentially to $649.4M, driven by record EML shipments and strong pump laser demand, while Systems revenue grew 30% sequentially to $356.9M on cloud transceivers and OCS. The company began shipping 1.6T transceivers and achieved record 800G shipments, and OCS revenue is expected to exceed $100M in Q1. Management also noted a one-time non-cash GAAP charge of $7.8B from equitizing convertible notes, reducing debt by $1.1B.

Management outlook

Management raised Q1 FY27 revenue guidance to $1.225B-$1.275B, reaching the $1.25B target more than a quarter ahead of schedule, with non-GAAP operating margin guidance of 39.5%-40.5% and EPS of $4.05-$4.35. They expect gross margin expansion to continue driven by product mix and operational execution, and see operating margin improving 100-200 bps above the prior 38%-42% target as revenue approaches $2B. Demand signals remain strong across EML, CW, pump lasers, and OCS, with 1.6T transceiver uptake intensifying from fiscal Q1 through calendar 2027. They are expanding capacity in Japan and Greensboro, and have secured long-term agreements to offset CapEx. Management also highlighted NPO as an additive opportunity, with first ELS module order received for delivery in 2H CY2027, and expects to provide updated financial targets at the next OFC.

From the call

We are positioned at the heart of a secular industry shift. As AI compute workloads increased in both speed and bandwidth, data center architects are turning to optical links as a primary means of connectivity.

on AI infrastructure shift

Our lead CPO customers' production plans remain very much on track and their demand signal has increased since our last update.

on CPO demand

We are way behind. Our shipments, unfortunately, on high-powered lasers. So we -- if one vector has really changed since the last time you and I talked, I'd say it's your high-powered lasers, and we are very much further behind.

What analysts asked

Given the stronger demand and favorable mix, how should we think about the next set of financial targets, especially with incremental opportunities like ELS, NPO, and OCS?

Michael Hurlston said they will likely provide new financial targets at the next OFC, noting they are running ahead on revenue, margin, and operating margin. He highlighted NPO, CW lasers, and OCS as incremental opportunities not fully factored into prior guidance, and expressed confidence in adding nearly $250M incrementally to the guide.

To what extent were you able to reprice backlog with customers, and how did that affect gross margin and outlook?

Michael Hurlston said they did reprice a little, with most LTAs having forward-looking price impact. He noted some benefit on gross margin from pricing, but the long pole was product mix, with more high-mix components shipped. He expects continued room for gross margin expansion.

Can you refresh us on the $400M+ OCS guide for 2H 2026, and how should we think about customers building versus buying?

Michael Hurlston said they are tracking to the $400M guide, not ahead, with supply chain issues resolved. He expects to become the #1 OCS supplier in early 2027, absorbing the majority of a key customer's internal program. He noted strong execution and customer recognition of their performance.

Potential supply chain impact
GOOGLGoogle is a key customer driving demand; Lumentum's strong results and 1.6T ramp could signal continued investment in Google's AI infrastructure.
NVDANVIDIA's direct investment in Lumentum and its role as a supplier of networking products could benefit from Lumentum's expanding optical solutions for AI clusters.
AAOIAs a competitor in optical transceivers, AAOI may face increased competitive pressure from Lumentum's first-mover advantage in 1.6T and strong laser chip portfolio.
IPGPIPG competes with Lumentum in industrial lasers; Lumentum's growth in ultrafast lasers for PCB drilling could impact IPG's market share in that niche.
MKSIMKS competes with Lumentum in photonics and laser products; Lumentum's margin expansion and capacity additions could intensify competition.
