Written before the market opens. Every price and move in this brief is as of the close on Friday, Aug 21; company pages show live prices. The Buildout is a website built on agentic AI tools, currently in beta, and could have factual errors.
SPY closed Friday at $765.72, up 0.41%, while QQQ added 0.35% to $713.44. The 523-stock Buildout universe matched the equity market with an average move of +0.36%, underperforming SPY by five basis points; 276 names advanced, 240 declined, and 7 were flat. Natural resources was the strongest segment at +6.13%, helped by critical metals, rare earths, and copper, while operators lagged at -1.71%. CRML (Critical Metals Corp.) gained 22.6% as the top mover, and HUT (Hut 8 Corp.) fell 8.8% as the largest decliner. Earnings resume Monday with SHMD (SCHMID Group N.V.) and GRRR (Gorilla Technology Group Inc.); Tuesday has SMTC (Semtech Corporation); Wednesday brings NVDA (NVIDIA Corporation), SNPS (Synopsys, Inc.), DY (Dycom Industries, Inc.), PLAB (Photronics, Inc.), and P (Everpure, Inc.).
An upsized $310 million convertible senior notes offering closed in the fiber space. WYFI (WhiteFiber, Inc.) disclosed the closing on Aug. 21, with the offering upsized from earlier terms. The company did not detail use of proceeds, but the raise adds to a run of fiber and fiber-enablement capital formation tied to AI-driven network expansion.
A $1 billion steelworks investment was announced with federal support. CLF (Cleveland-Cliffs Inc.) announced the investment on Aug. 21, backed by a $500 million U.S. Department of Energy award. The press release did not specify the full product scope.
A material agreement was disclosed by an optical transceiver supplier. AAOI (Applied Optoelectronics, Inc.) reported the agreement on Aug. 21 without detailing counterparty or terms. The filing is noteworthy because AAOI’s data center optical transceivers serve hyperscale customers, and material agreements can shift customer concentration risk.
The week’s headline earnings read comes Wednesday after the close. NVDA (NVIDIA Corporation) carries an EPS estimate of $2.09. The report will be a direct read on accelerator demand, next-generation GPU supply, and the pace of data center capital spending; it matters not only for silicon but also for memory, networking, packaging, and power demand expectations.
Synopsys and the photomask supplier Photronics also report Wednesday. SNPS (Synopsys, Inc.) has an EPS estimate of $3.67, and PLAB (Photronics, Inc.) has an EPS estimate of $0.4033. Synopsys’ guidance is a forward indicator for AI chip design activity, while Photronics’ photomask volumes provide a check on semiconductor manufacturing starts.
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday bring additional checks. SHMD (SCHMID Group N.V.) reports Monday; no consensus estimate is available. SMTC (Semtech Corporation) reports Tuesday with EPS estimate $0.614. DY (Dycom Industries, Inc.) reports Wednesday with EPS estimate $4.72, and P (Everpure, Inc.) reports Wednesday with EPS estimate $0.58. Dycom is a direct infrastructure read of that group, given its fiber and data center construction exposure.
Monday also brings ChronoScale. CHRN (ChronoScale Corporation) reports Monday with EPS estimate -$0.0626; no actual results have been reported yet.
Thursday brings IREN, Marvell, and Canadian Solar. IREN (IREN Limited) reports with EPS estimate -$0.554; MRVL (Marvell Technology, Inc.) reports with EPS estimate $0.931; and CSIQ (Canadian Solar Inc.) reports with EPS estimate -$1.01. IREN is a key read on data center power procurement and AI/HPC capacity; Marvell is a key custom silicon and electro-optics datapoint; Canadian Solar is relevant to utility-scale solar supply for data center power.
